True story: a few days ago I was walking down 45th Street and ran into the crowd waiting for Samuel L. Jackson leaving The Mountaintop, the play he is starring in until January, when he leaves to film his role in buddy Quentin Tarantino‘s spaghetti western, Django Unchained.
While it was exciting to catch a glimpse of the man who shot to fame as Jules Winnfield in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction as it is, it made me even more excited to see Django Unchained. Imagine my surprise when I woke up the next day and found out that according to Variety Mr. Samuel L. Jackson will be joined by Sacha Baron Cohen in the film. Cohen will have a “small” part as “Scotty, a gambler who buys Django’s wife as a female companion.” Something tells me he’s gonna get his ass killed by Jamie Foxx‘s Django at some point.
Cohen joins other recent Django Unchained casting announcements from earlier this week: Rex Linn (TV’s CSI: Miami) will appear as “Tennessee Harry” according to Deadline, and Todd Allen (TV’s CSI, NCSI) has been cast as the plantation overseer, Dollar Bill — also according to Deadline.
The three join an extremely impressive cast, including Jamie Foxx as the title character, Leonardo DiCaprio as villain Calvin Candle, Kurt Russell as slave trainer Ace, Kerry Washington as Django’s wife Broomhilda, Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as Django’s mentor and Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen, the house slave of Calvin Candle. The film is set for a December 2012 release.
